Jaguar XK120, XK140, XK150 (1948-1961)

Díky typu XK120 zakotvila značka Jaguar pevně na jednom z předních míst ve výrobě sportovních automobilů, ačkoli se tato firma se sídlem v Coventry ve skutečnosti soustřeďovala vždy spíše na sedany. Typ 120, jeden z nejrychlejších, nejpohlednějších a technicky nejpropracovanějších vozů své doby, byl v roce 1955 vystřídán typem XK140 a v roce 1957 pak typem XK150.


  
Během druhé světové války plánoval Jaguar výrobu limuzíny, která dosahovala rychlosti 160 km/h a byla poháněna pokrokovým šestiválcem o objemu 3,4 litru s odvážným rozvodem 2xOHC, což byla konfigurace do té doby vyhrazena pouze pro vysoce výkonné a mnohdy značně osobité sportovní automobily. Limuzína Mark VII se konečně objevila v roce 1951, ale zmíněný motor měl svou premiéru již o tři roky dříve na londýnském autosalonu 1948 v novém sportovním voze značky Jaguar, nazvaném XK120. Toto typové označení mělo vypovídat o téměř bezprecedentní největší rychlosti daného vozu (v mílích za hodinu) a jeho oprávněnost se potvrdila v roce 1949, kdy tovární vůz dosáhl v belgické Jabbeke rychlosti 212 km/h (132 míle za hodinu).


 
Stejně jako ostatní typy byl i tento pozoruhodný dvoumístný  roadster navržen talentovým ředitelem společnosti Jaguar, Williamem  Lyonsem. Stejně obdivovaný motor XK, uložený v podvozku s nezávislým zavěšením kol se zkrutnými tyčemi, které se uplatnilo  rovněž u sedanu Mark V. Kouzlo typu 120 bylo natolik silné, že poptávka po tomto voze společnosti Jaguar doslova zaskočila. Při kostruji karoserii prvních 240 kusů byly použity tradiční materiály hliník a dřevo, avšak u všech následujících vozů se běžně používal karoserie celoocelová. Výhodná zaváděcí cena 1273 liber byla při kalkulaci pořizovacích nákladů ve Velké Británii pouze akademickým tahem, neboť prakticky veškeré tipy 120 byly určeny na export, zejména do Spojených států. Automobil se objevil na domácím trhu až v březnu 1950. Následujícího roku uvedl Jaguar elegantní verzi kupé s nesnímatelnou střechou, kterou v roce 1953 doplnila varianta kupé se střechou sklápěcí.
